Highlighting Our School

One of the district goals for the 2008-2009 school year is focused around highlighting the successes of our small school. What are some ways that you think we can highlight what our teachers do in the classroom?

Thank you for starting this blog. I'm disappointed to see that more parents aren't commenting. I would love to see a Focus on Education section in the Observer Tribune, just an idea! Thanks and I appreciate everything that you are doing for Harding!

Just discovered your "corner" today. What a great idea. It seems like you're off to a great start at HTS.

Would it be possible to institute a rule at HTS that all e-mails from parents/caregivers must be replied within 24 hours? Even if it's just "I can't get back to you right now, but will be back later"?

On second thoughts, maybe the school and parents should be thinking of "good lines of communication", i.e. what works best in various situations.

Wow, what a great way to share ideas and different topics! I agree with Lotte Newlin, any response to an email is a great help to us parents.

As the parent of two sons with report cards looming (and as a Harding substitue teacher) I think it is important reminder that students (mine too) to be accountable for their actions (their comments, their grades and their behavior in general). I have promised myself not to defend them against bad grades and appropriate punishments if they have "earned" them. I see too many of my friends and peers arguing about grades, detentions and the like and making excuses for their children in the hopes of protecting them and keeping them happy. It is never to early to know that there is a price to pay for everything. When I ultimately send them out into the world it is my fervent hope that they will make decent choices and when they falter will at least clean up their own messes. That will be my reward.

As a teacher here at Harding, I think this blog is a great idea. Please know that the faculty joins Dr. Purnell in inviting comments and suggestions. It certainly is a proactive means of communication for our school and community!

Thank you for your comments Lotte and anonymous... I have contacted the Observer Tribune and will continue to keep them informed of school events. They are going to get back to me with regards to column on school events.
Lotte, sounds like you have some excellent concerns. These are concerns that I would bring before the principal. Ms. Klikier has monthly parent meetings. Contact us if you would like a schedule!

Bettina,
I completely resonate with your concern. Our mission as a district is to encourage our students to make better choices/decisions in life! Yes, we teach content and curriculum, but underlying everything is the preparation for tomorrow. I think you would find the Workforce Readiness Crisis article quite enlightening (http://www.techlearning.com/showArticle.php?articleID=193700630). I will certainly share your thoughts with our principal, Ms. Klikier.

Keon,

Thanks for your feedback on D.E.A.R. We are always looking to assess programs and happy to hear that you are utilizing the time to read. What book are you reading?
